The
Kiewa Valley Fishing Club was established in 1945
and was known as The Tawonga and District Anglers
Club up till 1990 after which time the club changed
its name to The Kiewa Valley Fishing Club.
The clubs aims have changed to focus more on protecting
and preserving our rivers and streams for the
future and the next generations. We use our say
as a club to voice our opinion on issues such
as re-stocking and management of the waterways
that effect us as anglers and can also effect
the future of our sport and environment. The
club promotes all types of fishing Fly, Bait and
lure.
The Kiewa Valley Fishing Club is based in
Mt Beauty at the head of the Kiewa Valley and
is surrounded by some of the best fishing that
the state of Victoria has to offer, the main
target fish is the Brown and Rainbow trout. The
impoundments of Rocky Valley Dam and Pretty Valley
Dam are located high on the plains of the Alpine
National Park. 20 minutes from Mt Beauty lies
the small hamlet of Bogong Village, which is nestled
on the shores of Lake Guy. There are numerous
tributaries of the Kiewa River that are fed by
the snowfields of the Bogong High Plains and all
of them have healthy stocks of both Rainbow and
Brown trout. These include some of the small mountain
streams such as Mountain Creek, Simmonds Creek
and East & West Kiewa Rivers, Diamantina River
and many others that yield and sustain the trout
of the future.
Mt Beauty Pondage is fast becoming one of
the Kiewa Valley's top fishing venues with trout
up to 3 kg being landed. As testament of the
quality of the fishing in the Kiewa Valley the
Mt Beauty Pondage and the Kiewa River were chosen
to be part of the Victorian Fly Fishing championships
that were held here in March 2002. The Australian
Fly Fishing Championships were held at Rocky Valley
Dam and Pretty Valley Dam in January 2001 and
because of the quality of the fishery the Australian
Fly Fishing Championships will be held in the
Kiewa Valley in December 2003.
